DatZ1143: Discrete Mathematics for Computing

Announcement:

  • The first exam was held during the lecture hours on Thursday, October 01, 2020. It includes all topics we have covered in Chapter 1.
  • We will have two online consultation sessions during the lectures on November 10 and 12, 2020. You will be able to ask your questions during the consultation sessions. There will also be a pilot test on each consultation session.
  • The second exam will be held during the lecture hours on Tuesday, November 17, 2020.
    • It includes all topics we have covered until now including Chapter 1.
    • It will be an online and multiple choice exam and you must take it by using https://estudijas.lu.lv/.
    • Your camera must be turned on during the exam. Otherwise, you will immediately get zero.
    • You must share your screen during the exam whenever it is requested by the instructor. Otherwise, you will immediately get zero.
    • It is an open note exam, and so you can use your non-electronic notes. During the exam, it is not allowed (i) to use any electronic notes or books, or (ii) to communicate with any parties except the instructor, or (iii) to use any internet resources, calculator, smart phone application, or similar tools, or any other electronic resources. Otherwise, you will immediately get zero.
    • The questions will appear sequentially and you will not be able to return any previous questions. There is no punishment for wrong choices. Therefore, we recommend to answer every question before proceeding with the next question.
  • The second and third exams are planned to be held in the first onsite lecture in the following period.
  • The second exam will be held during the lecture hours on Thursday, October 22, 2020. It includes all topics we have covered in Chapters 2 and 3.
  • The first online lab sessions will be held between 10:00 and 13:00 on Wednesday, October 28, 2020. We use the channel “labs” on Microsoft Team “DatZ1143-EN : Diskrētā matemātika datoriķiem”.

Textbook: Discrete Mathematics and Its Application, 6th Edition, by Kenneth H. Rosen

The office hours: I will use the last 10-15 min of each class as the office hour. So, please ask you questions onsite or online in these times.

The grading: We have two exams: Exam 1 (out of 25) and Exam 2 (out of 100). During January 2020, there will be a final exam day, on which you will be able repeat Exam 2. Your final grade will be maximum of (Exam2/10) and (Exam1/10+3*Exam2/40). We plan to have 4 exams during the semester (before the new year) and your grade will be summation of your scores in these exams. During January 2020, there will be a final exam day, on which you will have an opportunity to repeat one of these exams.

Online lab sessions: The lab sessions were cancelled. The lab sessions were suspended. Further decisions will be made in the following days. We plan to have a few (3 or 4 hours) online lab sessions on Wednesdays starting around mid-semester. The ones completed the lab works will earn bonus points. The details will be announced later.
